TripAdvisor not the truth advisor
It has become widely accepted that a traveler looking
for legitimate and objective information must approach tripadvisor.com with extreme caution and healthy, informed skepticism.
Despite the fact that TripAdvisor has issued assurances to
the press about its ability to filter our scammers, blackmailers, and fake reviews, the truth is that this popular travel
web site is more about making money for its corporate owner Expedia, Inc. than dispensing truthful advice.
While
most media commentary on TripAdvisor focuses on the effect of fake reviews on the traveling public and users of this and similar
web sites, investigations show that the tourism and accommodation industry also suffers severely from TripAdvisor policies
and negligence.
The facility and rapidity
with which fake reviews--positive and negative--can be published discredits the value of the information presented on tripadvisor.com.
Investigations by our editors and others have shown that tripadvisor.com has little way to detect fake reviews, and exercises
little or no editorial responsibility while still professing to do so.
