One of the most common concerns of Costa Rica vacation goers is "to rent or not to rent." Should the independent traveler
drive in Costa Rica, or use other means, including buses, commuter planes, and guides?

There's no doubt that driving in Costa Rica can be one of the most challenging--and at times frustrating--parts of a
vacation there. However, independant travelers may loose the ability to explore and really get to know the country without
their own vehicle. Our advice: go ahead and rent a car from one of the major, reputable agencies such as Dollar, and then
follow some important advice about negotiating Costa Rica's roads.
Always thoroughly inspect your vehicle before taking it out--car rental companies in Costa Rica will charge for every
scratch and ding. Mark down any previous damage on the apporpriate form. also, make sure you know the 24-hour contact
number for roadside assitance. if the company does not have one, rent somewhere else.
